In the SDK Manager above, there is a path to the Android SDK. This should present you with an editing screen for your paths. Open the Terminal app and in there enter: sudo nano /etc/paths Let’s add the android tools to our paths environment variable. There are a couple more steps I like to add here, since it will help you with future launches of the Emulator. (NOTE: It is totally possible to create an AVD from terminal, but for the sake of keeping this tutorial as beginner friendly as possible, I have opted to go for the IDE route.) You are now able to launch the Android Emulator. (NOTE: In order to install many of the IDEs and Tools in this tutorial, you are going to need administrator privileges on your machine!) However, if you are looking to tinker with React Native and only have access to a machine running Windows, then please take a look at this great tutorial by Kevin VanGelder.) For any iOS development, you will need to have an instance of macOS. Therefore, I am used to working on a Mac. (NOTE: I work primarily as an iOS developer, but I have spend a few years working in the Android space too. In order to get create React Native applications you are going to need the right IDEs. So let’s tackle this problem head on! Integrated Development Environmentsįirst things first. However, when starting out, the most complex thing can be setting up the environment and getting your first app launched. What I have found is that React Native is very simple to learn, and, as with all development, extremely addictive once you start seeing results. However, there seems to be evidence (at least anecdotally) to show that React Native has at piqued the interest of businesses who have access to JavaScript developers.įollowing on from this article, I have been spending the bulk of my free time studying hard and building various views and components in React Native. Cross platform technologies have been around for a long time, and each of them have their pros and cons. The premise for this is that organisations are constantly looking for cost effective ways of delivering products and services to their customers and that the mobile development industry is no different. Recently I wrote an article discussing the idea that the advent of a technology such as React Native could stem the flow of developers into singular platform languages and technologies such as Swift.
